WILKES COUNTY, Ga. -- The deputy coroner says an autopsy is underway after a deer hunter's body was found in the woods over the weekend.

The man has been identified as 35-year-old Jeffrey Sean Gebhardt of Blairsville, Ga.

Wilkes County Sheriff Mark Moore says they received the call late Saturday night. The caller said Gebhardt had called in saying he had been hunting in the Clarks Hill Wildlife Management area and was lost.

Emergency and rescue personnel searched the area but couldn't find Gebhardt. The GSP helicopter with the infrared system was called in and found Gebhardt in an area of marsh and grass that normally underwater but was exposed because of the low lake level.

The death investigation with the Sheriff's Office, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and the Department of Natural Resources was opened at 3 a.m. on Sunday.

The sheriff calls it a "questionable death" but won't go into more detail until the autopsy is completed.
