AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- Interim Administrator Tameka Allen has been the top woman in charge in Augusta for about five months. She took over once former administrator Fred Russell was fired.

"I enjoy what I do. I enjoy helping to move Augusta forward. I think when the commission started looking, they made it clear they wanted someone on the outside," Allen said.

Allen went on to say she did not apply for the administrator position, but District 5 Commissioner Bill Lockett expressed his support for her work.

"She would be an outstanding administrator," Bill Lockett said. "I think the reason why we wanted to go outside is because of what happened before."

Lockett is referring to when former administrator Fred Russell was hired. In the mid-2000's, he says no other candidates were even interviewed: Russell won by default.

"We don't need a politician in the administration's office. I want someone who has the particular type of education that's needed for the position," Lockett said.

The commission stated they wanted an administrator with a master's degree, three to five years of experience managing a government Augusta's size and the ability to balance a several million dollar budget.

Mayor Copenhaver is mulling over the brightest candidates and the top three to five could start interviews within a month.

"The mayor doesn't have a vote," Commissioner Marion Williams said. "He doesn't have that authority. It comes down to six votes still, and that's what we have got to remember. We have to do that."

The final candidates, chosen by the mayor, will go through interviews with the commission within the next month. Commissioners will then make a final decision.
