AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- An Augusta optometrist pleaded guilty on Wednesday to submitting over $800,000 in fraudulent Medicare claims.
Jeffrey Sponseller, 47, is an optometrist and owner of Eye Care One on Washington Road.
The court says Sponseller submitted claims to Medicare for nursing home patients' eye exams, claiming he was doing an expensive 45-minute eye exams on each patient. During one nursing home visit in July 2009, Sponseller claimed he did 177 45-minute eye exams all in one day.
Sponseller is facing a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000, plus restitution.
