AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- The Augusta firefighter at the center of a controversy is apologizing for a tweet he sent during the NBA Finals on Tuesday.

Andre Lacey tweeted: "How you signing the anthem lookin like an illegal immigrant," in response to a Hispanic child who sang the national anthem.

Lacey, who called News 12 on Friday afternoon, says his apology comes not as a City of Augusta employee or as a firefighter, but he's "apologizing as a humbly regretful man who made a tasteless comment."

He says he wants to apologize to everyone who was offended, as well as his son and family for bringing them into this unfortunate situation.
