AUGUSTA, Ga. -- News 12 has learned Superior Court Judge Bernard Mulherin died Monday morning.

Mulherin, an Irish-Catholic, began his legal career at the Hull Barrett law firm back in the 60s, says Pat Rice, who works at Hull Barrett currently. Rice says he worked there for almost 20 years until he was appointed to the Superior Court of the Augusta Judicial Circuit.

On the bench, he was first assigned to the domestic relations division, where he dealt with divorces and child support issues, among other things. Rice was a friend and distant cousin of the judge and says Senior Judge Mulherin revamped that entire division. Aside from the legal front, Mulherin also served as a city councilman and was on the Housing Authority and Development Authority. He was also instrumental in the consolidation of the City of Augusta and Richmond County.

"He loved life, he loved people, he loved to laugh, he always had a story, and, gosh, what a great guy. We're going to miss him," Rice said.

"He was a real outstanding judge who was fair and impartial and would give you a very prompt decision," said Sam Nicholson of Nicholson Revell, LLP.

Judge Danny Craig issued this statement on Judge Mulherin:
“Judge Mulherin was a good and faithful servant -- both to his family and the community of the Augusta Judicial Circuit. He was intelligent, insightful and wise. We will miss him. Hopefully, those who knew him will celebrate his life by emulating his selfless commitment to justice and the fair-minded administration of our courts."

"Judge Mulherin was a wonderful man and great jurist. I had the honor of having Judge Mulherin swear me in as a practicing attorney at the onset of my career. He will be greatly missed by the legal community," said Juvenile Court Judge Jennifer McKinzie.

They also say Judge Mulherin had a sense of humor like no other. He was also extremely fair on the bench.

Mulherin's visitation is set for 6 p.m. Tuesday at St. Mary's On the Hill Catholic Church. His funeral is at 11 a.m. on Wednesday at the church.
