Augusta, Ga. (WRDW) -- The streets around Augusta National could be changing ownership soon. Commissioners will vote tomorrow on a plan to swap acre for acre with Augusta National in order to realign Berckmans Road and Alexander Drive.
The city could also sell right of ways of Hemlock Road, Stanley Drive and Heath Drive as well. Drivers use Berckmans Road all the time, but during Masters week things get congested.
"I know not to come this way during masters. I already know. I already have a different area, I travel during that time," driver Yvonne Graham said.
"I avoid this place during Masters Week," driver Galloway Harold said.
Harold used to live near Augusta National, but has moved to Columbia County. He still knows all the short cuts to avoid traffic in the area.
"I try to avoid stop lights. I try to take the fastest route. I try to avoid Washington Road the best I can," he said.
"This will be ours and that will be there's," City Engineer Steve Cassle said.
City Engineer Steve Cassle is talking about the possible land swap between Augusta National and the city of Augusta for the realignment of Berckman's Road.
"In exchange for the right away swap, they want to look at the right of ways of other streets including like Old Berckman's Road, " said Cassle.
Other areas like Cherry Lane that are not part of the acre by acre swap could be sold to Augusta National at fair market value.
The total cost of the project is around $16 million. We reached out to Augusta National to find out if they planned to close any of the roads to traffic, but have yet to hear back.
"Well I hope they don't, because this is my little shortcut to get to the store. I don't have to go all the way around," said Graham.
