Augusta Interfaith Coalition wants to help commissioners

News 12 at 6 o'clock / Monday, March 18, 2013

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- On Tuesday, members of the Augusta Interfaith Coalition will ask the full commission if they can be part of the solution.

"We're hearing so many people say, 'I want to take it. I want to go the mall and downtown,'" said Denise Traina, transportation chairman for the Augusta Interfaith Coalition.

Mobility could be rolling out and that means the city has to either run the bus service itself or let a private company do it.

"I think the major goal is to expand and provide a current level of service. It may take us a little while to get there," said City Administrator Fred Russell.

"He said this wasn't falling on deaf ears. We are going to take this and look at it, but still, nothing's changed. We think the next best thing is to have a working group with the commissioners," she said.

Traina is addressing the group on Tuesday.

"We've seen the failure of the privatization effort recently with Mobility. We think the city is capable of making opportunities available," Traina said.

Traina and her group have been working for more than a year, talking with bus riders who tell her the buses are always late and even drive by passengers on the street.

The Augusta Interfaith Coalition wants to form a board to work with commissioners to fix the city's transit issues.
