AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- An Augusta city employee is behind bars, accused of two counts of child molestation.
Khalid Franklin, 42, was arrested Wednesday after a grand jury indictment.
It all has to do with something that allegedly involves his female family members.
"A DUI for a truck driver means we have a problem. Child molestation charges are something that gives me great concern," said City Administrator Fred Russell.
If he's found guilty, Franklin could be facing five to 20 years in the pen.
"Whenever you have an allegation, we must do a complete investigation," said RCSO PIO Lt. Calvin Chew.
"The main thing is that they are innocent until proven guilty. We need to make sure we never forget, that no matter how horrible the charges might be," Russell said.
The charges include two counts of child molestation. The first case was reported by a female relative to Richmond County deputies in January of 2011.
"We have to talk to a lot of witnesses. We have to gather more evidence," Chew said.
Chew says while they were investigating the first claim, a second female relative came forward. She says Franklin touched her between 2006 and 2007.
"They're scared and they don't want to come forward. It does take them a lot of time to come forward," Chew said.
"We've got to look at and judge whether or not the charge affects their job," Russell said.
Franklin has worked as a housing inspector for Housing and Community Development for two years. Franklin is still employed because he has not been convicted of anything.
"Our concern is that we make sure they are treated as innocent until proven guilty. We also want to look out for the well-being of the public. We have to juggle those two items," Russell said.
