Augusta Commissioner tries to make changes to airport

AUGUSTA, Ga (WRDW)----One Augusta Commissioner wants to change the city's charter to make Augusta Regional Airport more independent.

The Airport Director said time is money and the Augusta Commission's back and forth has cost the airport quite a lot saying the issue will probably land in the Commission Chambers, anyway.

Plans could be taking off for the Augusta Aviation Commission to have more control.

"I think it's important to not get ahead of ourselves. The concept was discussed and I think it could work," Airport Director Gary Letellier said.

"I don't for-see it blowing back and for me it's an easy fix," Commissioner Joe Jackson said.

Commissioner Joe Jackson began with state leaders rather than county officials he sits beside weekly. He wants the Aviation Commission to have final approval on their spending and not the Augusta Commission.

"There have been delays. I'd say significant delays. It's the press of business. It's a county government airports are kind of unique in that regard," Letellier said.

The Augusta Richmond County Charter puts the Aviation Commission in charge of things at the airport. However the charter states final approval on spending will come from the Augusta Commission.

"I found out about the meeting. Gary told me about it. I'm the mediator and you gotta start somewhere," Jackson said.

Senator Jesse Stone and Rep. Wayne Howard told Commissioner Jackson he should work with county officials first.

It now looks like his plan has been re-routed at least for now.
