AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- Commissioner Joe Jackson's wife died over the weekend leaving behind her Augusta family, Commissioner Alvin Mason said.

Mary Jackson was battling cancer for more than a year.

"We are praying for him and his family," Mason said. "I give my condolences to Joe and the kids."

The Commission plans on honoring the Commissioner's wife this week during their weekly meeting.

Mayor Deke Copenhaver's statement on Mrs. Jackson's passing:

"Mary was an extraordinarily strong lady whose life and the way she battled this disease is a strong testament to her unshakeable faith as well as her commitment to her family and friends. I've had the opportunity to visit with Joe and he and the family are staying strong in the midst of a devastating loss. I would simply ask that our entire community rally around them during this difficult time and keep them lifted up in prayer."
