FORT GORDON, Ga. (WRDW)--Christmas is already on the minds of many at Fort Gordon, including Shawn Williams who, for the first time this year, is co-running the Post's Christmas House program.
"The mission of Christmas House is to provide a traditional holiday for service members' families who are unable to provide one for themselves," said Williams, the Army Community Service Mobilization and Deployment Program Manager.
The program is income based and families can start applying in a few days on October 1st.
It helps military families provide that traditional holiday for their children by accepting toy donations from the community and allowing accepted families to pick from that selection free of charge.
"They go through and they're almost like children--the adults, coming to pick up the toys," she said. "We don't get to personally see the smiles of the children, but we can see it through their service members or the family members."
Right now the shelves are still pretty bare but by the time the holidays roll around there will be enough gifts to service about 700 to 800 children.
"Even though we manage it, it is fully volunteer run," she said. "And, they are the most excited group of people who's hearts are the biggest I have ever seen."
Based on previous years, Christmas House will serve about 300 military families and the community's donations will be worth thousands of dollars.
And Williams says it's a perfect opportunity for folks to lend a supporting hand to their military neighbors.
"It's the community giving back to the community and we have some of the most wonderful people that are a part of this program," she said.
You can be a part of the program too. Families can go to http://www.gordon.army.mil/acs to find the Christmas House application, included with instructions on where to turn it in.
