Analysis: South Carolina, Georgia among top 'dirtiest' states

NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C. (WRDW) -- South Carolina is the best out of 50 states for being the worst at cleaning up, an American State Litter Scorecard shows.

South Carolina is being called the dirtiest state for 2014 on the scorecard while Georgia is fourth to last.

The scorecard was presented at the American Society for Public Administration Conference last month. States get their ratings if they follow certain indicators including litter taxation, per person daily waste disposal by state, percentage of "profiled litterers" per state and more.

  • 2. Nevada
  • 3. Indiana
  • 4. Georgia
  • 5. Kentucky
  • 5. Wyoming
  • 7. South Dakota
  • 8. Lousiana
  • 9. Michigan
  • 9. New Mexico
  • 10. Oklahoma

In 2011, South Carolina was considered average by the scorecard at 28th most clean. At that point, Georgia was ranked in the "worst" column at 42.
