AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- Hospital officials confirm that nine people at an Augusta plant had to be taken to the hospital following an ammonia leak.

The leak was reported on Thursday morning at the FPL Foods Plant at 1301 New Savannah Road.

Georgia Regents Medical Center says they have one female patient who is in the process of being treated and released.

University Hospital officials received five patients, all of whom are going to be released shortly. An additional three patients had to be decontaminated outside the emergency department before being brought inside the hospital.

Hazmat teams on the scene say they believe the leak started in the refrigeration system.

Officials say plant has been evacuated and will remain closed for the rest of the day.

The plant was formerly known as the Shapiro meat packing plant.
