AIKEN, S.C. (WRDW) -- Aiken Technical College will discontinue all intercollegiate athletics programs at the end of this semester, according to a news release.

The news release cites lack of resources as the reason to halt the men's basketball and women's softball teams.

“We are proud to have provided our students the opportunity to compete in intercollegiate athletics while pursuing their academic goals, and we have consistently been impressed with their successes,” said ATC Athletics Director and Dean of Student Development Dr. Vinson Burdette in the release. “The decision to discontinue the athletics programs was a difficult one, but we believe it is the right choice in order to best serve the entire student population and fulfill the college’s mission.”

Current student-athletes will keep their scholarships through the end of the spring 2014 semester, according to the release. Students who decide to transfer will be assisted by Aiken Tech staff.

The men's basketball program began in 1991. The women's softball team started in 2004.
