AIKEN, S.C. (WRDW) -- Aiken County Democrat Probate Judge Sue Roe would rather not run as a Democrat in the future.

On Monday night, during the Aiken Legislative Delegation meeting, she asked lawmakers to consider proposing legislation that would make the office of probate judge non-political in all counties throughout the state.

Roe, who’s served as Aiken County’s probate judge since 1984, faced a tough Republican challenger in November, realtor and outspoken political activist Jane Page Thompson.

"I decided early on that I was not going to allow her to demean my person dignity or the dignity of the Aiken County Probate Court,” Judge Roe said of Thompson, back in November.

On Election Day, Roe drew on Democrat and Republican support. She defeated Thompson by about 7,000 votes.

On Monday, Rep. Bill Clyburn, D-Aiken, said he would support the legislation to make the office non-political.

Roe said she understands it will be a tough fight, since politics are ingrained in the system now.
