After 3 decades of business, West Side Bowery closing in Aiken

Monday, Aug. 19, 2013

AIKEN, S.C. (WRDW) -- After opening its doors in 1981, the West Side Bowery restaurant in Aiken will close them in just a couple weeks.

On Monday, owner Sam Erb announced to a room of well-wishers that he is retiring. The well-loved Aiken restaurant will be sold to create a third Mellow Mushroom in the area. This location, which should open in February 2014, will be walking distance from Aiken's Pizza Joint.

The Bowery will close Aug. 31.

"Today is exciting," said Mellow Mushroom owner Shawn Ledford. "I know for Sam it's been bittersweet. It's the end of something, but he's happy for us that it's going be something new. We're extremely happy to be here. It's exciting for us. It's the third location. It's something we've wanted to do for 10 years."

Many credit the West Side Bowery for bringing a new life and a lot of people to "The Alley" in Aiken.
