Augusta, Ga. -- A 19-year-old Grovetown teenager has been identified as the victim in this morning's triple-vehicle accident on Bobby Jones Expressway.
The Coroner says Taylor Durrence was behind the wheel of a silver Nissan pickup truck merging from the ramp off Dean's Bridge Road onto westbound Bobby Jones Expressway. Durrence was apparently coming off the ramp at a high rate of speed when he lost control.
Durrence crossed the median into oncoming traffic and hit a semi truck head-on.
The truck was coming eastbound on 520. Investigators say the fuel tank of semi ruptured, and the diesel fuel poured out. The fuel was contained with sand and deputies say it is not a hazard. Hazmat crews were called to clean up.
A male and female traveling in a white SUV swerved to avoid the accident and crashed into the side of the road. They are not injured.
The semi truck diver was taken to the hospital to be checked for injuries.
The accident happened around 10 o'clock this morning, and traffic was moving normally again after noon.
Taylor Durrence was one of News 12's "Miracle Children" in 2003 for our annual Children's Hospital telethon fundraiser.
