AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- The Richmond County Sheriff's Office says 21-year old Javonist Gant is the suspect who led deputies on a chase that turned into a crash.

The chase started when deputies say Gant drove a 2004 Suzuki Forenza car through a red light at 15th Street and Walton Way around 10:30 p.m. Thursday.

Investigators say the pursuit stalled briefly in the Dogwood Terrace neighborhood but resumed when Gant turned onto Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. The chase ended when deputies say Gant ran another red light and was hit by a 2002 Nissan Maxima car driven by Westley Christopher Guyton.

Deputies were able to arrest Gant and learned there was a female in the car with him. Jewel Sturgis, 17, was arrested and charged as well.

Guyton and his girlfriend, Brittany Lamar, were treated at the scene for minor injuries.

News 12 has attached a mugshot from Gant's arrest in 2011 for allegedly leading Columbia County deputies on a chase after a robbery at a liquor store.
