UPDATE: 2 injured in train derailment near Burke/Richmond Co. line

Waynesboro, GA (WRDW) --- We are learning more information about the train derailment near the Burke and Richmond County line.

According to Rick Harris with Norfolk Southern a tractor-trailer ran into the side of the train around 12:30 pm Tuesday afternoon.

He says the train was traveling from New Jersey to Savannah.

The train consisted of 2 locomotives, 12 cars were loaded, 26 others empty.

24 of those cars derailed during the accident.

Those traveling on Southbound on Hwy 56 will go Hephzibah- McBean to Hwy 25 South.

Northbound on Hwy 56 is being detoured at the bypass in Waynesboro, and according to Burke County Dispatch they are also routing traffic through Old Waynesboro Rd. to Augusta

Waynesboro, GA (WRDW) --- News 12 has learned that two vehicles are involved in the train derailment near the Burke and Richmond County line.

The drivers of a pick- up tuck and tractor-trailer are now at the hospital with non-life threatening injuries from the accident.

According to Chief Taylor with the Augusta Fire Department and Emergency Management Division, Hwy 56 at the County line will be closed up to 48 hours due to the derailment.

There have not been reports of any spills and leakage from any of the tanker cars.

Those traveling on Southbound on Hwy 56 will go Hephzibah- McBean to Hwy 25 South.

Northbound on Hwy 56 is being detoured at the bypass in Waynesboro, and according to Burke County Dispatch they are also routing traffic through Old Waynesboro Rd. to Augusta

It's unclear who is at fault in the accident.

Norfolk Southern, RCSO, BCSO, and GSP are all investigating.

Waynesboro, Ga. (WRDW) -- Richmond County dispatch confirms a train carrying logs derailed on Mike Padgett Highway near the Burke and Richmond County line this afternoon.

They say at least seven cars derailed, but no injuries have been reported yet.

Mike Padgett Highway is blocked in the area right now.

Chief Taylor with the Augusta Fire Department and Emergency Management Division says Highway 56 at the county line will be closed for the next 48 hours to clean up the derailed cars.
