AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- A Richmond County Teacher is asking for your vote for mayor.

Josey High school teacher Lori Myles would like to become Augusta's first female mayor.

She's said her experience in and out of the school has prepared her for taking the city's top spot.

Augusta has never had a female mayor, but with two women in the race could that change?

"It is my hope that Augusta does not look at my race neither my gender. This is just a brown paperback. You need to make sure you know the messages that are coming out," said Mayoral Candidate Lori Myles.

Myles is a wife, mother and teacher. She's taught in the Richmond County schools for more than 17 years. If she wins, she'll be the one in the desk instead of up teaching.

"Once going in, I'm going to have too learn as much as they are. They are already putting into affect," said Myles.

Myles said she was bit by the politics bug after campaigning for two mayoral candidates. This includes er voter registration work with the 100 Black of Women of Augusta and seeing the plight of residents in Cherry Tree.

"I decided to basically watch everybody come out of the gate. I knew already that this would be the four years," said Myles.

Myles has been no stranger to controversy. She's accused of trashing her classroom after an investigation in 2006 and not following the dress code. Just last year, she was accused of using a flier with the n-word to discipline a student. She denies all those claims.

"I still don't think the word should be used and everyone should know the meaning of it," she said.

Will Myles become the first female mayor? We will find out in May.
