AUGUSTA---Richmond County school transportation leaders say they need parents to register new students so they can plan the bus routes.

Director Jimmie Wiley says his staff is working overtime planning routes for new students. Their goal, he says, is for students to not have to walk any farther than a tenth of a mile from their home to meet a bus.

He admits they are waiting to see how many bus drivers finish their summer physical exams before they are allowed to return to work. That could lead to some last minute staffing adjustments. He is waiting to hear from as many as 10 drivers that have not turned in the proper paperwork.

Wiley is encouraging parents to check with the school their child will be attending for bus information and school hours. Watch News 12 This Morning for the latest information as the start of school approaches, and check wrdw.com's EducationTeam 12 page for helpful links.
