AUGUSTA, Ga.---Lots of girls got some encouragement and a few life lessons tonight.
A group of 12 to 15-year-old girls listened to Leslie Annis, the second speaker of the new school year to talk to the Smart Girls Club at Tubman Middle School.
The girls reviewed last month's book, The Woman Who Raised Me by Victoria Rowell, and the girls get a new book to read and discuss for next time.
News 12 spoke to the director of the club, Pat Vanhooser, who says she wants the girls to learn valuable life lessons.
"Everybody faces adversity and trouble. You just can't away from it. But how you handle it determines what kind of character you have and how well you get through life," Vanhoose said. "And so these are the things we are trying to teach now."
The Smart Girls Club collects no dues, and the girls meet the third Thursday of each month at Tubman Middle School.
