Local Update - September 14, 2007

School Bus Accident
Three students and the driver are recovering this morning a fter a school bus accident Thursday afternoon
It happened around 4:30 on Old Savannah Road.
There were 21 students on board, 3 of whom were taken to the hospital.
19 year-old Jessica Hammond was behind the wheel of the car that hit the bus.
She will be charged will following too closely.

Richmond Middle Schools Not Making the Grade
This morning, every middle school in Richmond County is on the state's "Needs Improvement List."
To get off that list, schools have to make AYP for 2 consecutive years.
Principals will now start monitoring each child's academic progress on a weekly basis, so they can help students before the end of the grading period.

New GA Graduation Requirements
The Georgia State Board of Education voted Thursday to add more math and science classes for freshman.
Now, all students are required to take a minimum of 3 years of science, and students on vocational tracks will have to take 3 years of math in order to get their diplomas.
The plan will also gives students a choice of computer, fine arts, and foreign language classes.
The new law has some educators worried the change will hurt the state's lagging graduation rate.

Robbery Suspects Sought
Deputies are looking for 2 men who help up a convenience store at gunpoint in Aiken.
It happened at the Four Seasons Food and Fuel on 2450 Storm Branch Road in Beech Island just before 10 o'clock Thursday night.
