NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C.---It's only a couple of days old and the 12 On Your Side Call For Action office is already a success.
Today was Day 2 for our new Call For Action office. Of course, that's our new resource for you to get help with any consumer issues.
The phones were ringing off the hook again, and our volunteers were taking all types of calls. The calls they are getting aren't all that different from what Call For Action is getting all over the rest of the country.
Many of you have already been taking advantage of this consumer hotline for help with your consumer issues, but there are some things you can do to keep from needing to call.
"People do not seem to be doing their homework. You need to look into the offers you get. You want to research the products. And read all the fine print. Don't ever just sign your name to a contract," said Call For Action's Eduard Bartholme.
Doing that can keep you from falling for some of the biggest problems the agency is seeing right now nationwide.
Both internet and telemarketing scams and home improvement scams are rampant around the country. Call For Action has already taken calls on those scams right here in the Augusta area.
Another huge problem is the fake lottery check scam. That's the one where a mysterious and subsequently bogus check comes in the mail for a lottery you've never entered.
"It's actually one of the fastest growing scams we're seeing now. A lot of people think they can win a lottery without entering them," Eduard said.
If you fall for these scams, 12 On Your Side and Call For Action will try to help you, but by avoiding them in the first place, you'll save yourself from even needing to be helped.
If you need help with your consumer problems, Call For Action is here for you Tuesday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
It's a service for you, so please call 803-442-4550 when you need help.
