HEPHZIBAH, Ga. -- Imagine being ready to pay off your home and become the sole owner, only to discover you can't find the person who has the title.
That's just what one Hephzibah man says happened to him.
Terrance Mclaughlin is ready to pay off the loan on his home. He has the money, but he just needs to find the person he's supposed to hand the check over to, which is proving to be harder than he imagined.
Terrance and his wife Angela have always enjoyed living in Hephzibah. "I like it out here in Hephzibah. I grew up around this area," he said.
So a few years back, they bought a home.
And, they've been faithfully making payments on it ever since. Not too long ago, they got something most homeowners’ dream of, some extra money.
"I wanted to pay the house off," Mclaughlin said.
But that's just when his problems started. For weeks, when he tried to contact Alice Varney of Value Homes, the person who he needed to pay and who has the title, he couldn't reach her.
"I've left messages, tried to get my title. I've tried to pay her to get my titles. She won't return my calls or nothing," Mclaughlin added.
It's a problem that almost seems unfathomable, a homeowner wants to give someone money to pay off their home and that person can't be found.
12 On Your Side called Alice Varney several times without her calling back. On Thursday, we found her at her home.
And it just so happened on the day we found her, she told us the Mclaughlin's would be able to pay on Friday and would have their title the same day. She wouldn't tell us why there had been any delay.
Those are words Terrance is glad to hear, but they don't mean he's ok with the way everything happened. "It's frustrating," he concluded.
