Local Update - August 27, 2007

Vick to Plead Guilty
Today Michael Vick will plead guilty to federal dogfighting charges.
In Vick's written plea agreement, he admitted to helping to kill six to eight pit bulls and supplying money for gambling on the fights.
A judge will now have to decide how much time Vick will spend in prison.
The plea agreement calls for a sentencing range of 12 to 18 months, but Vick could spend as many as five years in prison.

Teacher Passes Away
This morning, students, friends, and family are mourning the loss of a Warren County music teacher.
The McDuffie County Coroner says Marilyn Betty Campbell died at MCG Sunday morning.
She passed away after being involved in an accident this past week while she was on her way to work at ME Freeman Elementary School in Warrenton.

Drag Strip Meeting
Tonight, the controversey around a proposed drag strip is revving up again.
People who live in the part of South Augusta who would be most affected by it will have a chance to speak out tonight.
A meeting starts at 7:00 at the McBean Community Center.
Commissioners Don Grantham and Jimmy Smith are both expected to be there.

Commission Qualifying Period
This morning kicks off the qualifying period for those who want to be your next commissioner.
This period includes Augusta Commission Districts 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10.
Candidates can officially qualify starting at 8:30 this morning.
They have until Friday, August 31st at 4:30 pm to get all the paperwork filed.
The election is November 6th.

New Ellenton Special Election
Voters in New Ellenton head to the polls tomorrow to choose a new member.
Seat one of the New Ellenton City Council is open after Mark Key stepped down.
The candidates are democrat Prestic Faulk and republican David Felder.

Blood Drive
You can save as many as 3 lives just by rolling up your sleeve.
Tuesday, the Shepeard Community Blood Center is hosting a blood drive from 8 am to 8 pm.
Once again this year, the Time to Care Blood Drive will be at the First Baptist Church on Walton Way.
