AIKEN CTY, S.C.---Firefighters worked a large brush fire off Highway 278 in Aiken County for hours this afternoon and evening.

Officials closed the Aiken-Augusta Highway at the bypass and Highway 421 from 118 to Richland Avenue. Traffic was also being detoured at the Greenville Road intersection coming into Aiken and at Aiken Hitchcock Parkway (Highway 119) at Augusta Road.

Two shops and a car wash were evacuated, but officials said there was no danger to nearby neighborhoods.

Almost every fire department in the area was on the scene, including SRS, Bath, Aiken City, North Augusta, and Aiken County. Richmond County has sent trucks to stand by at locations in Aiken County.

Two firefighters were treated for mild heat exhaustion so far, but neither was transported to a hospital, and there were no other injuries.

Detours were expected to be in place well into the night.
