Hephzibah -- Making sure you're ready to deal with this kind of heat means you need to be investing some money in one of the most expensive things around your home: your air conditioner.

Replacing your home's air conditioner can cost about as much as a decent used car.

You probably keep your car tuned up, so why wouldn't you do the same with your air conditioner?

Tis the season for James Waites to be incredibly busy.

James services and repairs air conditioners for a living and this week's scorching temps have created quite a workload for him.

Most of the time James gets called for problem that could be prevented if people were getting their air conditioners serviced regularly. And he sees all kinds of problems.

"The condenser is real dirty. It needs a good cleaning," he said.

All of that can play a big role in how cool your air conditioner keeps you in your home. Most of the things that need to be done require a professional, but not always.

There is one thing you can do that's easy and you don't need an expert for, and that's cleaning or changing your air filter every few months.

And then have a professional out at least twice a year to look things over. Consider this, an air conditioner can cost a fortune; sometimes it can be upwards of $5,000 or even $10,000 dollars.

Unless you have that kind of money to burn, get it tuned up because that will help it last a lot longer.

"A lot of times they could double the life of the air conditioner," Waites said.

Another thing you can do is to turn the unit off while you mow the grass and keep the grass from blowing towards it.

You wouldn't realize it, but all that grass gets clogged in there and can reduce its lifespan by several years.
