No death penalty for man charged with killing teacher

August 8, 2007

AUGUSTA, Ga.---The young man charged with murdering his former teacher cannot face the death penalty.

David Drayton was 14 years old at the time of his attack on his teacher, Linda Gail Hendrick, at Murphey Middle School.

Hendrick was in a coma for nearly eight years, and died in May.

Drayton was arraigned for her murder last month. He pleaded not guilty.

District attorney Danny Craig says he cannot seek the death penalty against Drayton because of Drayton's age at the time of the crime.
