AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- A 9-year-old boy was left with marks after being hit with a belt for performing poorly at school and not doing his homework, according to an incident report.
Richmond County Sheriff's Office arrested Curtis Tyrone Darby, the boy's father, on two counts of child cruelty after admitting to deputies that he made the 9-year-old undress and hit him with a belt.
The boy's grandmother, Natalie Cunningham, told deputies she "had a bad feeling" and asked Darby to bring the boy to her home, according to the report. She said she called the police after Darby, 39, told her he hit he and her daughter's son with a belt and saw the markings.
Deputies said the boy had belt marks from his waist to the nape of his neck and on parts of his arms and legs. The boy was sent to University Hospital's emergency room for an evaluation and met with an investigator.
Kimberly Cunnigham-Darby, the boy's mother, said Darby shook the boy before because of a condition with the 9-year-old's left eye. The report indicates she said it was later diagnosed as a medical condition causing an eye deformity. She said the Florida charges were eventually dropped.
