Deputy recovering after dragged along with car

August 6, 2007

AUGUSTA, Ga.---A deputy is recovering after being dragged in a police chase. The driver of the car is also recovering--from a gunshot wound.

Investigators say this all started at Tubman Home Road and Tudor Drive in Augusta, and ended at Wilkinson Gardens Elementary School. A witness tells News 12 a deputy, Ryan Giacomo, pulled Danny Hughes over for speeding and found that he'd been drinking and there were warrants for his arrest.

Somehow, Giacomo got caught in the vehicle. Hughes pulled away, dragging the deputy along. Deputy Giacomo shot Hughes in the arm to get loose.

The car went a few blocks before crashing into a tree near the elementary school. Hughes jumped out and ran, but was arrested shortly thereafter.

Giacomo has been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation.
