AIKEN, S.C. -- One jockey was sent to the hospital Saturday afternoon after being thrown from a horse during Steeplechase in Aiken.

The horse was not able to clear a jump, throwing the jockey to the ground and causing the horse to fall on its side.

The jockey was knocked unconscious but was awake and talking in the ambulance, paramedics told News 12. A race organizer said the jockey was taken to the hospital and is doing well.

The horse was able to roll over and stand up after the fall, before trotting down the track.

At least one other jockey was thrown in a separate accident but was able to walk away from the scene.

This year's turnout was the largest ever for the event. Organizers estimated 35,000 people visited the track.

The event is celebrating its 80th year, having grown from a gathering of about 100 people.

Saturday's warm weather was a huge draw for spectators, many of whom spent the day tailgating at the track.

"This is probably my 18th year coming to the Steeplechase. My husband and I get a spot every year. We just love having family come into town and our friends come," said Beth Bryant-Barranco.

"I'm just a social butterfly. It's just fun. It's a huge party and everybody loves being here."
