Augusta -- Finding a good doctor can be one of the toughest, yet most important things you do for your health.
Whether it's a cold or cancer, the right doctor can make all the difference in the world in getting you healthy.
It can seem like a challenging task, but it doesn't have to be.
Around a year ago, Linda Hughes got some earth-shattering news from her doctor. "He said Ms. Hughes, you've got acute leukemia," she said.
But acute leukemia wasn't something her doctor treated. "He said I'm going to refer you to the Medical College of Georgia and Dr. Jillella."
It was a referral that would save Linda's life. If she wouldn't have gotten to M.C.G. and Doctor Jillella, she might not be sitting here today.
“She is doing extremely well," Dr. Jillella said.
For Linda, she got the right doctor for what she needed, and Doctor Jillella says that can make all the difference in the world. "If you're not comfortable with the physician that's taking care of you, it's best to make a change," he suggested.
Whether you've got heartburn or a heart condition, choosing a physician can seem like a daunting task.
So where do you start??
First, ask your family and friends what doctor they see.
Whatever doctor you choose, make sure they are qualified to treat whatever it is that is bothering you.
But in the end, it is a decision you will have to make on your own, so trust your instinct. That's exactly what Linda did.
"I feel like the most blessed and fortunate patient in the world," Linda concluded.
Don't be afraid to ask for an appointment to meet and talk with the doctor and the staff.
Remember, just because a waiting room has the most bells and whistles, doesn't mean that's the place you'll get the best care.
