WILLISTON, S.C.---Authorities say a 48-year-old Williston man was murdered by his friend over the weekend at a busy grocery store.

It happened in the parking lot of the IGA store off Main Street. One suspect has already been arrested on a murder charge.

Around 6 o'clock on Saturday night in a parking lot full of shoppers at IGA police say 39-year-old Alton Clay Brown pulled out a 12-gauge shotgun and open fired. "The yelled, 'oh' and lifted up his shirt, came inside and fell onthe floor, that's when I realized he was shot," said the assistant store manager, Tony Dunbar. Police say Brown was aiming at 39-year-old Clarence Weathersbee. "I couldn't believe it because things like that don't happen here," he said. Family members say the gunman didn't just know Weathersbee, the two grew up together since childhood. "They hang together all day, wash cars...how could this happen?" asked cousin, John Weathersbee.

While police say they still don't know why the argument broke out, the men had been with eachother throughout the day before the shooting occured. "This shooting appears to be a retaliation to whatever the dispute was about," said Investigator Rodney Pruitt. The family says they may never understand why, but they're comforted just knowing his alleged killer is now behind bars. "He was a good man, we're gonna miss him, we love him" said daughter Domonique Weathersbee.

Brown was arrested in Orangeburg County early Sunday morning after his sister told police she believed her brother had stolen her car before the shooting. Police had several tips he fled to the nearby town of Springfield. Brown has been charged with murder.

Everyone has their own opinion, it doesnt matter who hit who, who slap who, whatever. Killing an individual is not right and should be dealt with according to the law. I miss my cousin, now we cant have anymore family reunion trips together!! It's not fair!!!

First of all I would like to say that I am truly sorry for what has happened over the weekend.Alton Brown is my uncle and I know deep down inside he did not mean for this to happen. My uncle is not a sick man! he would never harm anyone unless they've done harm to him.We will be here for my uncle and we will also be here for the victims family. But the only person my uncle has to answer to is God! I love my uncle and I will never turn my back on him on matter what!We are a strong family and we will get through this.

Premeditated murder: Not only was this murder, but he had no regard for the lives of other people whom also could have been shot. Also the grief and hurt that he has cause both families. This man thought of no one but himself, therefore I think the state of South Carolina should seek the dealth penalty.

glover, your savage attitude following this tragic killing is indicative of the mentality that leads to such actions. Great- he's your "unc"(sic) but so what, he committed a premeditated murder and stole another human beings life- the law of the jungle is great amongst animals but this was a human being and AB did not kill him for food!
