WILLISTON, S.C.---Authorities say a 48-year-old Williston man was murdered by his friend over the weekend at a busy grocery store.

It happened in the parking lot of the IGA store off Main Street. One suspect has already been arrested on a murder charge.

Around 6 o'clock on Saturday night in a parking lot full of shoppers at IGA police say 39-year-old Alton Clay Brown pulled out a 12-gauge shotgun and open fired. "The yelled, 'oh' and lifted up his shirt, came inside and fell onthe floor, that's when I realized he was shot," said the assistant store manager, Tony Dunbar. Police say Brown was aiming at 39-year-old Clarence Weathersbee. "I couldn't believe it because things like that don't happen here," he said. Family members say the gunman didn't just know Weathersbee, the two grew up together since childhood. "They hang together all day, wash cars...how could this happen?" asked cousin, John Weathersbee.

While police say they still don't know why the argument broke out, the men had been with eachother throughout the day before the shooting occured. "This shooting appears to be a retaliation to whatever the dispute was about," said Investigator Rodney Pruitt. The family says they may never understand why, but they're comforted just knowing his alleged killer is now behind bars. "He was a good man, we're gonna miss him, we love him" said daughter Domonique Weathersbee.

Brown was arrested in Orangeburg County early Sunday morning after his sister told police she believed her brother had stolen her car before the shooting. Police had several tips he fled to the nearby town of Springfield. Brown has been charged with murder.
