Barnwell, CO.---Community in Blackville remembers pastor at Macedonia Baptist Church after he was found dead last Friday. Authorities say 51-year-old preacher, Phillip McCreary was shot once in the back of the head while fishing.
Everyday except Sunday, McCreary's wife Anne, says you could find her husband fishing at his favorite spot. "He said he went there because it's peaceful and he could talk to God," said McCreary's sister Mary McCreary-Jones.
So when the associate pastor never made it back home on Friday night, his wife knew exactly where to find him, "It was devastating," she said.
Authorities say his body was found near the banks of the Edisto River off Highway 39. "I don't understand why someone would do this to a man of God, shoot him in the back of the head then go away?" said McCreary-Jones.
Barnwell County Sheriff Ed Carroll says they still haven't been able to find a motive or witnesses to the shooting, making it difficult to find out what happened to the preacher. "Whoever did this, turn yourself in you think no one saw you but God saw you and it's gonna come out," said McCreary-Jones.
Funeral services for McCreary will be held on Friday at 2pm in the auditorium of the Blackville Hilda High School. He will be buried at the Oakey Spring Baptist Church in Springfield.
