AUGUSTA, GA-- Abusive relationships have been in the news often lately. In the recent cases, men are accused of killing their wives or girlfriends.

This week 49 year old Marcia Woods of Augusta became the latest victim. She was shot to death by a former boyfriend, according to Richmond County investigators.

News 12 talked with a local woman who has made it her mission to help women end the abuse cycle before it is too late.

Kay Mixon is with the Cumbee Center in Aiken. Over the past 20 years she has seen battered spouses and broken spirits. Mixon says that anyone can be a victim...and that there are several misconceptions about who the victims really are.

“The oldest client we’ve had in the shelter was 92 year old. She had been beaten by her alcoholic husband,” Mixon says.

Stories like that one and the fact that South Carolina ranks number six in the nation for domestic violence keep Mixon motivated and busy.

The American Institute of Domestic Violence says up to 95 percent of domestic violence victims are female. If you are a victim or know someone who is you can call 1-800-799-7233 for help.
