McCORMICK, S.C. -- An inmate at a maximum security prison outside of McCormick has died after being stabbed Saturday morning, the South Carolina Department of Corrections said.

A prisoner attacked 26-year-old Lamont Perry around 7:30 a.m. inside a dormitory at the McCormick Correctional Institution. He was pronounced dead a short time later, the department said in a news release.

Perry started serving a 15-year sentence for second-degree criminal sexual conduct in 2005. He was sentenced in Dorchester County, the department said.

The department and the state's Law Enforcement Division are investigating the attack.
