Local Update - June 18, 2007

Special Elections Tomorrow
Tomorrow, voters in Georgia's 10th District will choose who they want to represent them in Congress.
Six repulicans, three democrats, and a libertarian running.
One of the candidates, Jim Whitehead, is vacating his seat in the Georgia Senate in order to run, so a second election will be held for Georgia's 24th District.
News 12 will bring you complete coverage from the time the polls open until all the ballots are counted.

Busy Day Tomorrow at the Augusta Commission
There are quite a few things on tap at the Augusta Commission tomorrow.
Commissioners will get an update on reports of theft, drugs, and cell phones involving the Recreation Department and inmates at the Richmond County Correctional Institute.
A discussion about the City Attorney's alleged breach of the confidentiality of a city employee.
It has to do with her computer hard drive.
Commissioners will also talk about the censure of Commissioner Calvin Holland.

Another Superintendent Candidate in Town
Another Richmond County School Superintendent Candidate is in town this morning.
Doctor Susan Clark from McDonough, Georgia is scheduled to meet with board members today.
Friday board members sat down with two other candidates, Doctor Dana Bedden from Pennsylvania and Doctor Shirley Carraway from Hillsborough, North Carolina.

Fallen Deputy
The McDuffie County Sherriff's Department is mourning the loss of one of their own.
11-year veteran Jerome Jackson died Saturday after falling unconscious behind the wheel of his cruiser.
Jackson leaves behind a wife, three sons, and a daughter.

SREL Closing
40 people could be out of a job by the end of the month at the Savannah River Ecology Lab, but there's some confusion over who will actually get a pink slip.
Last month, employees learned the lab would not be receiving the funding it needs to stay open.
Friday, the University of Georgia mailed a list with 40 names on it, but that list is incorrect because it includes people who were already planning to resign or others mandated to finish research projects funded by grants.
