AUGUSTA, Ga.---A suspect wanted in two carjackings on June 8 has been identified by the sheriff's office as Gary Lee Murphy of Aiken. Murphy is a registered sex offender in South Carolina.
Deputies say on Thursday, June 8, Murphy forced his way into Lucia Bradham's 2002 GMC Yukon at Top Notch Car Wash, driving off with her purse still inside.
The suspect was later caught on surveillance video using Bradham's credit cards to make several clothing purchases at the Dillard's in Augusta Mall. Deputies say Murphy then changed clothes, abandoned the Yukon, and approached another woman in the parking lot. He asked Dominique Chargois for a ride to Kroger.
Upon arrival at Kroger, he demanded she hand over her keys and belongings. They struggled briefly and Chargois sustained minor injuries. Murphy escaped in her 2004 Ford Mustang, with Georgia license plate number AVE 7688.
Anyone with any knowledge of the suspect is requested to contact the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office Violent Crimes Division at 706-821-1080 or 706-821-1020.
