Local Update - June 8, 2007

Early Morning Accident
One person is recovering after an accident in Columbia County this morning. A car crashed in the westbound lane of I-20 just past the weight station. It happened around 3:30 this morning. We know one person was injured, but there's no word on the extent of those injuries

Deadly Accident
An Appling man is dead this morning after an accident in Augusta. Twenty-three-year-old Meyrick Morstad was killed after crashing his motorcycle at the intersection of Washington Road and Furys Ferry.

Aiken Deadly Accident
Aiken County's death toll on the roads is now up to 20. The latest deadly accident happened at the intersection of Richland Avenue and University Parkway in Aiken. Eighty-two-year-old Janet Anderson was killed.

Murder Charges
A domestic situation turns deadly at a home in Augusta. Sixty-one-year-old Charles Perez is in jail this morning, accused of stabbing his wife to death. Their daughter found the body of 57-year-old Deborah Perez inside their Richmond Hill home Thursday morning.

Check Fraud
Investigators are looking for four people for creating and forging fake checks. We're told they used them at the Discount Mart convenience store and several others stores in the area.

Extra Money
Some old tax money is being put to new use this morning. Augusta Commissioners voted to spend $1.2 million left over from the penny sales tax to improve the downtown area. The money comes from SPLOST projects that finished under budget.
