Local Update - June 4, 2007

Bald Bandits Arrested

Investigators say the infamous "Bald Bandits" are in jail this morning. Brian Cates and Christopher LeFever are now charged with being involved in a dozen robberies across the area. Cates was on parole at the time of his arrest. He lives on Wheeler Lake Road in Augusta, and that's where deputies made the arrest. They say his partner in crime is 33-year-old Christopher LeFever. He was arrested Friday night at a Columbia, South Carolina hotel.

Robbery Suspect in Jail

The man accused of an armed robbery at the Family Dollar on Deans Bridge Road is also in jail this morning. Deputies say Dennis Tucker went into the store with a knife Saturday night and got away with some money. Deputies caught up with him around Milledgeville Road. He is in jail charged with armed robbery.

Murder Charge

A former student is now looking at murder charges in the death of a Murphey Middle School teacher. Linda Gail Hendrick died Thursday after being in a coma for more than seven years. David Drayton was convicted in 1999 of aggravated assault. He was tried as a juvenile since he was just 14 at the time and served five years in prison.

Road Alert

One lane on Washington Road will be closed at the Davis Road intersection for construction starting today. It will remain this way until Friday (June 8). Camilla Road at Davis Road will also be closed today. Crews are working on the intersection there. It will reopen Wednesday (June 6).

Superintendent Update

We can expect to learn more about Richmond County's search for a new school superintendent this week. The school board will announce three finalists.
