THOMSON, Ga.---A robbery this morning off I-20 in Thomson led to a manhunt that lasted into the afternoon. Law enforcement officials captured William Busbee of North Augusta in the woods in Greene County after he crashed his truck off Highway 77.
Investigators tell News 12 Busbee robbed the 24-hour Waffle House restaurant in Thomson at gunpoint around at 5:45 a.m. then led police on a long chase west on I-20, eventually turning off on Highway 77 in Greene County, about 65 miles west of Augusta.
Police found a mangled truck on the side of the road as well as a handgun and cash inside. A witness says he saw the suspect getting out of the truck and moving very slowly after crashing it into a tree.
Law enforcement from eight different agencies searched the woods on foot and on four-wheelers with tracking dogs and helicopters.
Busbee was finally taken into custody at 1:30 pm. He was taken to the McDuffie Regional Medical Center for treatment before he was transported to the McDuffie County Jail.
He faces a host of charges, including armed robbery and eluding police.
