AIKEN CTY, S.C.---A Lexington County woman has died after her car struck a tree in Aiken County.

50-year-old Anita Vega died when her 2006 Pontiac Solstice veered off I-20 westbound into the median and struck a tree near mile marker 35 just before 4 o'clock this morning. Vega suffered multiple body trauma and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Deputies say witnesses recalled the car being in the lane closest to the median before leaving the roadway. Due to the lack of braking marks, deputies say Vega may have fallen asleep at the wheel. Alcohol and drugs are not believed to have been a factor.

Vega was employed by Delta Airlines at Augusta Regional Airport. Deputies believe she was on her way to work when the crash occurred.
