AUGUSTA, Ga.---The Richmond County Sheriff's Office says you might want to be a little more careful with your mail, especially with any checks or credit card applications.
If you've ever wanted to help stamp out fraud, the Richmond County Sheriff's Office says you can start at your own mailbox.
Deputies are on the lookout for a man they say stole a Hepzibah woman's mail on Thursday.
Inside that mail was a check, which deputies say was forged and then cashed for more than $500.
Deputies say this is a good reminder for you to be more careful with what you put in your mailbox.
They recommend you mail anything with sensitive or financial information on it at the post office.
If that won't work for you, you might want to put your mail in the mailbox when you leave for work in the morning, instead of leaving it in overnight.
Deputies do say that check forging is not the biggest worry with stolen mail. The big one is those credit card applications you get every week.
They say it's a lot easier to use those to steal someone's identity than it is to forge a check.
