AUGUSTA, Ga.---Richmond County investigators are working yet another murder for 2007.
A neighbor found 29-year-old Tollie Mitchell shot to death in his car at around 4 o'clock this afternoon. He was parked on Thomas Lane in the Regency Square apartment complex.
There is no suspect as yet, but investigators are hoping that the clues they do have will lead them to the person responsible for this murder.
"Five feet away from my front door, somebody got killed!" said CJ Mahoney, a Regency Square resident.
Mahoney says he moved there three months ago, and to have a murder so close to home is unnerving.
"I come outside and you see a swarm of investigators and the car door was open," he recalled.
"I'm not scared," he went on. "It makes me want to lock the door even more, but it's not cool when you come outside and realize somebody has died."
Deputies used dogs to track the scent of any possible suspects. Lt. Scott Peebles says that they're hoping it may help in the investigation.
"We're just making sure and seeing if there's any fresh scents, and making sure that we cover everything," he said. "But we have some active leads and we're not sure if that's going to produce anything at this point."
Other residents say there's been a lot of activity in the complex, and that the neighborhood is not the safe haven it once used to be.
"Neighborhood gone to waste," said one resident, Jack.
"It's crazy to see this," said another.
"I don't understand how somebody could get shot in the head and they still don't have nobody in custody yet," said a third. "Gosh...sick!"
The Richmond County Sheriff's Office is offering a cash reward for any information which leads to the arrest and conviction of the individual or individuals responsible for the shooting death of Tollie Mitchell.
