The hunt is on for a convicted felon investigators say murdered a mother right in front of her young child.
Richmond County is looking for 34 year old Jimmy Lee Jones Junior who is considered dangerous.
It happened off of Thames drive in the Cambridge neighborhood, off Tobacco Road in South Augusta.
Investigators say Jones shot his ex-girlfriend Latoya Singleton while she held their 8 month old baby in her arms at 3:30 Saturday morning.
He was spotted around 9:00 Saturday morning, driving a pickup, on Highway 56 toward Burke County. Officials believe he could now be headed for Florida where his father lives.
Deputies say the truck may have been stolen from the international paper lot. The truck is described as a gray 2005 or 6 GMC 2500 HD diesel. It has a crew cab and an unknown South Carolina tag. There is a chrome toolbox in the bed and a white hand pump style fuel tank containing about 100 gallons of diesel fuel. Thompson industrial service is painted on the doors and the number 23137 is printed on the front fender. You are asked to call the sheriff's office immediately if you see the suspect or the vehicle.
Latoya Singleton's family says she was a beautiful and intelligent woman who fell victim to domestic violence. Now they want everyone to hear her story, to help get an alleged killer off the street.
29 year old Latoya Singleton is seen here 8 months ago, holding her newborn baby girl.
Investigators say it's the same embrace she would hold as she took her last breath.
Her cousin, Tawanna Singleton said, “We just don't have any answers, you know. Why? She was just too good of a woman”
Officers responded to a panic call about 3:30 Saturday morning, but it was too late. Singleton's lifeless body was discovered inside her home. Investigators say she had been shot once in the head, while holding 8 month old Antonasia. And investigators say the baby's father, 34 year old Jimmy Lee Jones Jr., pulled the trigger. Officers believe he escaped by running out the back door. Bloodhounds tracked his scent outside the couple's Cambridge neighborhood, where they believe he got into a car somewhere on tobacco road.
“We need to get this murderer off the streets,” said the victim’s cousin.
And while investigators search for Jones, Singleton's family is forced to pick up the pieces without her, a woman they say was a loving mother and hard worker that got involved with the wrong man.
“She was scared. I know she was scared. She had pretty much got rid of him changed her locks and changed her phone numbers because she was afraid of him.”
But Singleton's family says they never thought it would come to this. Now they say they have a message for the man they say took something that will never be replaced
“You took my cousin, and it's a shame. You need to be under the jail and never come out again.”
Latoya singleton's family says they plan to start a domestic violence foundation in her name.
Jimmy Lee Jones Jr. is described as a 34 year old man just over six feet tall, 210 pounds, and bald.
Once arrested, he faces murder and cruelty to children among other charges. He is a convicted felon and is considered dangerous. Anyone with any information is asked to call the sheriff's office.
Singleton's family says the baby was taken into protective custody at the scene; they are now working with DFACS in order to visit her. They hope to have custody awarded to them at a court hearing on Tuesday.
