SAVANNAH, Ga. -- A Georgia-based Army cook who's also a single mother faces possible criminal charges after she refused to deploy to Afghanistan, saying she had no family members able to care for her 10-month-old son.
Commanders at Hunter Army Airfield in Savannah had 21-year-old Spc. Alexis Hutchinson arrested by military police Nov. 6. She remained confined to the Army post Monday while her case is investigated.
Her attorney, Rai (RAY) Sue Sussman, says Hutchinson planned for her mother in Oakland, Calif., to keep the child during her yearlong deployment, but Hutchinson's mother decided she couldn't because she's caring for three other relatives with illnesses and special needs.
Hunter Army Airfield spokesman Kevin Larson says no charges have been filed. Hutchinson's son is in California with his grandmother.
