Augusta health department calls $180,000 cuts "heartbreaking"
Augusta's health department is facing close to $200,000 in cuts.

AUGUSTA---Augusta's health department is facing close to $200,000 in cuts.

"It breaks my heart because Richmond County has a good amount of needy people," said health department director Ketty Gonzalez. "They rely on the health department to meet their health needs."

The department is being slashed by $183,000. All 90 health department employees are facing monthly furloughs. At least 5 layoffs are on the table. Department leaders say the public should prepare for longer lines and wait times.

"Absolutely," said Dr. Gonzalez. "Because that means that I will not be able to have the clinic open all of the time. We have to reduce staff."

The health department is one of more than 20 agencies facing 15% cuts this year.
