AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Georgia state senator Ed Tarver plans to resign his Augusta seat now that the U.S. Senate has confirmed him as the next U.S. Attorney for 43 counties in Georgia.

The senator will resign his 22nd district seat at noon on Monday, November 9.

Tarver will also be leaving his job as a partner at the Augusta law firm Hull, Towill, Norman, Barrett & Salley, P.C..

The U.S. Senate confirmed Tarver as the next U.S. Attorney for 43 counties in the state. The Southern District of Georgia extends from north of Augusta all the way down to the Florida state line.

President Barack Obama nominated Tarver for the position on September 17. He still needs to make the appointment official.

Ed Tarver talked to News 12 on Friday about his confirmation.

"I am extremely honored to serve this district and country and look forward to the challenges that lie ahead once the President signs the commission," he said.

Lt. Governor Casey Cagle congratulated Senator Tarver for this nomination.

"I want to be among the first to congratulate Senator Tarver on receiving a strong vote of approval from the U.S. Senate last night. He has worked diligently in the State Senate and is respected by many under the Gold Dome. I am confident he will embrace a new position as U.S. Attorney with the same thoughtful leadership he displayed in the State Senate. We congratulate him on such a high honor."
