FORT HOOD, Texas (AP) -- A Fort Hood spokesperson says at least 12 people are dead, including the gunman, and another 31 are wounded after a shooting at the post.
The shooting suspect is Major Malik Nadal Hasan. Hasan is believed to be in his late 30s, and to be an Army mental health professional.
Now investigators are trying to determine if Hasan was his birth name or if he changed his name and converted to the Islamic faith at some point during his life.
The Army says Hasan had two guns and opened fire around 1:30pm Central time at the Soldier Readiness Area. It is a place where soldiers go for medical and dental checkups right before being deployed.
Two other soldiers who may have been involved have also been taken into custody.
We're told a civilian police officer who worked at Fort Hood was killed in the attack.
The Fort Hood spokesperson is calling this event "stunning" and that people are devastated.
They are not releasing a motive at this time.
